It is our military presence around the globe that breeds terrorism. It's blatantly obvious. Over 700 bases around the world is hardly weak in fact, it's too much.

Bring them home and defend the republic.

To protect our country, we must have all those bases around the world. If we don't, then the enemy will have the access to set-up closer to our country. Having these bases around the world also quickens our response time. I also believe that our presence around the globe is more of a deterrent than a ignition for terrorism.

Haha...I agree with both of you. Certainly some of our bases act as a deterrent...South Korea for example. On the other hand, these bases seem to piss off everyone in the neighborhood. I think the overall view of the world towards us IS that we are imperialistic...as we most certainly are. Personally, I'm for a little less imperialism. It's kind of like this: if you have bumper stickers on your car like say, Nuke the Gay Whales, or I Love Animals, They're Delicious, or McCain/Palin '09, you're going to piss someone off...might as well paint a big target on your back. We'd be much better off with lots of Peace Corps Volunteers everywhere actually helping out the locals. Then maybe the terrorists wouldn't have any reason to come after us.

Martha, not everyone is in that boat right now, and (good or bad) mortgages don't fix unemployment.

As for the bases, Lida is actually closer to the truth. While we did set up "imperialistic" agreements to get some, if you really look into it most countries benefit as much from our bases as we do and want us to stay. Don't misconstrue the loudest voices as being the majority or for that matter the most accurate, relevant, and intelligent.

Oh, and Liz, while I am a peace loving liberal, I also work in defense and I'm sorry to point this out, but terrorists don't actually need or always have a real reason for what they do. That's what makes them terrorists, and that's what makes fighting them so different and important. That said, Bush didn't go about it correctly; and Obama's diplomacy has done as much to improve our security as the wars themselves.
